BAS & IAS: What’s the Difference and Do You Need to Lodge?

If you're a business owner, you've probably heard of BAS and IAS lodgements—but do you know the difference? Understanding your tax obligations is crucial for staying compliant and avoiding unnecessary penalties. Let’s break it down.

What is a BAS?

A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is required if your business is registered for GST. It reports:
✅ GST collected on sales
✅ GST paid on expenses
✅ PAYG withholding (if you have employees)
✅ PAYG instalments (if required)

BAS is typically lodged quarterly but can be lodged monthly depending on your business size.

What is an IAS?

An Instalment Activity Statement (IAS) is for businesses that aren’t registered for GST or need to report PAYG withholding outside of BAS lodgements. It’s typically lodged monthly.

Do You Need to Lodge?

If you're registered for GST, you'll need to lodge a BAS. If you're a sole trader or employer but not GST-registered, you may need to lodge an IAS instead.
